What is Claude, and why should you care?
You've probably heard people talking about AI. Maybe your nephew won't shut up about it. Maybe your colleague mentioned something called "ChatGPT" in a meeting. Maybe you saw a headline about robots taking over the world and decided the whole thing isn't for you.
Fair enough. But here's the thing: there's a tool called Claude that's genuinely useful, completely free to try, and requires absolutely no technical knowledge to use. Let me explain what it actually is.
Think of it as a really smart text conversation
Claude is made by a company called Anthropic. You go to their website, type something in a box, and Claude responds. That's it. There's no software to install, no account required to try it, and no code involved.
It's like texting someone who has read an enormous amount of stuff, can write well, thinks clearly, and never gets annoyed when you ask follow-up questions.
What can it actually do?
Here are some things real people use Claude for every day:
- Writing emails. "Help me write a polite but firm email to my landlord about the broken boiler." Done in 10 seconds.
- Explaining things. "Explain how a mortgage works like I'm 25 and buying my first flat." Clear, patient explanations without the jargon.
- Summarising long documents. Paste in a 20-page report and ask "what are the three main points?" and you'll get a clear summary.
- Planning. "I'm going to Barcelona for four days with a 7-year-old. Plan our trip." It'll give you a day-by-day itinerary.
- Getting a second opinion. "Here's a job offer I received. What questions should I ask before accepting?" Thoughtful, balanced advice.
Why Claude specifically?
There are a few AI tools out there. Claude is different in a couple of ways that matter to normal people:
- It's careful. Claude is designed to be honest. If it doesn't know something, it'll usually say so instead of making something up.
- It's good at long stuff. You can paste in entire documents, contracts, or articles and it'll work through them properly.
- It sounds human. The responses feel natural, not robotic. It's actually pleasant to read.
What it's NOT
Let's be honest about the limitations:
- It doesn't browse the internet in real time (unless you specifically use a feature for that). It has a knowledge cutoff date.
- It can occasionally get facts wrong, especially about very specific or recent things. Always double-check anything important.
- It's not a person. It doesn't remember your previous conversations by default (though there are ways to set that up).
- It's not going to steal your job. It's a tool, like a calculator or a search engine, except more flexible.
How to try it right now
Go to claude.ai. Sign up with your email (it's free). Type something. Anything. "Help me write a birthday card for my mum" or "Explain what's happening with interest rates" or "What should I cook tonight if I have chicken, rice, and some sad-looking peppers?"
Just talk to it like you'd talk to a helpful friend. That's literally all there is to it.
